Two of the most common verbs used in Spanish are ser and estar which of course are irregular verbs. Ser and estar both mean “to be” and are used differently in Spanish.
Over time and with practice, you will build your vocabulary and understanding of grammar.
A great study tool is to create sentences that you imagine yourself saying or that you plan to use. Or simply ones that you like.
Ejemplos con ser:
¿Qué día es hoy? (What day is today?))
Hoy es sábado, el 11 de agosto. (Today is Saturday, August 11th.)
¿Cómo es tu novio? (What’s your boyfriend like?)
Es dulce, amable y ama a Jesús. (He’s sweet, kind, and loves Jesus.)
Ser o no ser, esa es la cuestión. (To be or not to be, that is the question.)
¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños? (When is your birthday?)
El 14 de octubre. (It’s October 14th.)
Aprender es divertido. (Learning is fun.)
¿Cuándo fueron tus últimas vacaciones? (When was your last vacation?)
Hace cuatro años, cuando fui a España. (Four years ago when I went to Spain.)
¿Qué tal tu cita? --Fue muy divertida. (How was your date? --It was so much fun.)
¿Cómo fue tu primer día de clase? (How was your first day of school?)
Fue estupendo. (It was awesome.)
Mi padre y sus hermanos eran ingenieros. (My dad and his brothers were engineers.)
Sé amable. (Be kind.)
Sé valiente. (Be brave.)
Es bueno que Maggie reciba adiestramiento canino. (It's good that Maggie gets dog training.)

¿Cómo están tus padres? (How are your parents?)
Están bien. (They are good.)
Lo mejor está por llegar. (The best is yet to come.)
¿Estás casado/a o soltero/a? (Are you married or are you single?)
¿Tienes pareja? (Are you in a relationship?)
Estoy casado/a. (I’m married.)
Estoy soltero/a. (I’m single.)
(Note: Can also be used with ser depending how you use it.)
¿En qué curso estás? (What grade are you in?)
Estoy en octavo. (I'm in eighth grade.)
Estoy en tercero de secundaria. / Estoy en el tercer año de secundaria. (I am in the third year of high school. / I’m a Junior in high school.)
¿Dónde estuviste anoche? (Where were you last night?)
Estuve en casa de Katy. (I was at Katy’s house.)
¿Qué hacías mientras yo no estaba? (What were you doing while I was gone?)
Estaba limpiando la casa. (I was cleaning the house.)
Ambos (Both):
¿Cómo estuvo tu día? (How was your day?)
Mi día fue genial. (My day was great.)
