Abbreviations in English & Spanish

Abbreviations are "shortened forms of words or phrases that are generally understood by the majority of the population" (Berlitz.com). This blog will mostly focus on two types of abbreviations: acronyms (acrónimos) and initialisms (iniciales). Acronyms are pronounced as a new word. Initialisms are read as individual letters.

With soooo many to pick from, I chose some abbreviations common to ME. As well as, a mix of formal and informal. | Como hay tantas entre las que elegir, seleccioné algunas abreviaturas que son comunes para MÍ. Además, una mezcla de formales e informales.

Acronyms - read as a word (leer como una palabra)

*a.C. -- acronym is read as *antes de Cristo // B.C. -- Before Christ

CA -- la corriente alterna (alternating current) // A/C -- air conditioning (el aire acondicionado)

*EE.UU. -- acronym is read as *Los Estados Unidos // USA -- United States of America

*etc. -- acronym is read as *et cetera (Latin) (and so on) // etcétera

PIN -- personal identification number // el PIN -o- el NIP (el número de identificación personal)(Mexico)

Initialisms - read each letter (leer cada letra)

A/C -- air conditioning (el aire acondicionado) // CA -- la corriente alterna (alternating current)

AI -- artificial intelligence // IA -- la inteligencia artificial

AKA -- also known as // alias (adverb)

ATM -- automatic teller machine // el cajero (automático)

BO -- body odor // (el) sobaquina, el olor a sudor

BRB -- be right back // vuelvo enseguida

BYOB -- bring your own beer/beverage // llevas tu propia bebida

DIY -- do-it-yourself // el bricolaje, el bricolage (Argentina, Spain) -- bricolage is a French term for creating something new from a diverse range of available materials & resources

DM -- direct message // (el) mensaje directo

DOB -- date of birth // (la) fec. nac. (la fecha de nacimiento)

e.g. -- exempli gratia (Latin) (for example) // ej. -- ejemplo (example)

ETA -- estimated time of arrival // la hora prevista de llegada

FAQs -- frequently asked questions // (las) preguntas frecuentes

FYI -- for your information // para tu información, para su información

ID -- identification // el identificación (proof of identity)

i.e. -- id est (Latin) (that is) // ej. -- ejemplo (example)

JK -- just kidding // es broma

LOL -- laugh out loud // jajaja, qué risa (how funny, what a laugh)

MIA -- missing in action // desaparecido en combate

N/A or NA -- not applicable // no corresponde
